National Leaders of Education (NLEs)

National leaders of education (NLEs) are strong school leaders, who have experience of effectively supporting schools in challenging circumstances. NLEs work alongside teaching schools and other system leaders to provide high quality support to those who need it most.

  • Emma Lake - Executive Headteacher - Hangleton & Benfield Schools

    Experience of School to School Support

    Emma has supported a number of different schools in a variety of ways. This has included:

    • Coaching of a new or developing Head teacher
    • Joint lesson observations and review of teaching and learning across a Primary school
    • Data review and action planning
    • School business manager supporting and action planning with other office support teams
    • Supporting the strategic development of a school in an OFSTED category
    • 2 day reviews, including a comprehensive report of all areas of a school

    Impact 

    • Senior leadership teams feel more confident in their judgements of teaching and learning and ways forward, as an external consultant has verified their judgements
    • Schools used the 2 day reviews to write detailed action plans for whole school improvements
    • Data has been used effectively to plan for interventions and focus of teaching – outcomes at the end of KS2 improved
    • Governors/LA/Academy sponsors feel more informed about the position of a school and areas for development.

  • Sophie Thomas - St Andrew's CE Primary School

    Sophie has recently joined St Andrew's CE Primary after being the Headteacher at Newick Primary CE Primary School since 2007.  She was also Director of Newick Teaching School. Sophie's area of expertise are:

    • Developing systems to support in-school monitoring e.g. schedules, lesson observations, pupil progress meetings.
    • Coaching
    • Strategic overviews for School Development Plans
    • Improving standards of teaching & learning
    • Moving schools from Requires Improvement to Good and Good to Outstanding.
    • Working with Leadership Teams
    • Working with leaders to improve their leadership skills
  • Stuart McConnachie - Coldean Primary School

    Stuart has been a Headteacher in both an Infant School and a through Primary School, in areas of high deprivation with Brighton and Hove. 
    Alongside the staff from his school they have used their skills and experience to support schools, often in challenging circumstances. The main focus being to bring about School Leadership improvement and help raise standards.

    Experience of School to School Support 

    • Stuart has supported a number of different schools in a variety of ways. This has included:
    • Supporting a number of schools in creating a cohesive plan that brings continuity to the school and focus on school improvement.
    • Longer term ‘Executive Arrangements’ with schools that find themselves in a vulnerable position after the departure of senior leaders.
    • Joint lesson observations and review of teaching and learning across a Primary school
    • Data review and action planning
    • School business manager supporting and action planning with other office support teams
    • ‘Talent spotting’ in schools to grew middle leaders.
    • Supporting the strategic development of a school in an OFSTED category
    • 2 day reviews, including a comprehensive report of all areas of a school
    • Dealing with challenging behaviour.

    Impact 

    • Schools have felt empowered to move on in their journey towards successful OFSTED judgements.  This is due to a shift in staff moral, rigorous structures being in place and senior leadership teams feeling more confident in their judgements of teaching and learning and ways forward.
    • Schools used the 2 day reviews to write detailed action plans for whole school improvements
    • Data has been used effectively to plan for interventions and focus of teaching – outcomes at the end of KS2 improved
    • Governors/LA/Academy sponsors feel more informed about the position of a school and areas for development.
